“A Second Look” (highlights of the first series)

Episode 1.12
17 March 1983

The programme began with the TH helicopter (G-BHXU), flown by Keith Thompson, but this time carrying Kenneth Kendall, landing in the grounds of a Surrey mansion 1  where Anneka Rice 2  was waiting outside.

Inside the mansion, Kenneth and Annie presented the show from a sofa with a view of the helicopter through the window behind them. They introduced many clips from the 11 episodes 3, including some close finishes and faux pas made by themselves 4  and the contestants. They also explained the programme’s communications system and how to solve a TH clue 5.

Notes
1 Locating the venue for “A Second Look” was like solving a TH clue. Kenneth mentioned the name of the country manor at the start of the programme, but it was difficult to hear against the noise of the helicopter. It sounded like “Hatch... Surrey” with only “Surrey” being clear. Checking the map, the nearest match is Hatchlands Park, an NT property on the A246 east of Guildford.
2 Instead of her usual skyrunner’s jumpsuit, Annie wore a fetching pink suit.
3 Particularly interesting was a clip from the Bali episode. The layout of the studio where the Bali episode was recorded (between 02.00 and 05.00 because of the time difference) was a one-off – unlike any other TH set – suggesting that this was a pilot programme.
4 Including Annie’s “display of oarsmanship that would have Nelson spinning in his grave” [Kenneth’s words] in Greenwich.
5 As an example, Kenneth chose the first clue of the Speyside episode, where contestants Roger and Katherine lost 6 minutes in finding the connection between Banquo’s Ghost (Shakespeare’s Macbeth) and Nelson’s Tower, Forres, where the clue was hidden.
