Notes
Annie, dressed in a pale blue skyrunner suit with check sleeves and trim and an ‘A’ on her hip, complains of feeling cold on the foggy, windy hilltop.
At 228 feet in diameter, Lady Isabella, near Laxey, is the world’s largest water wheel. “Can you reach the wheel?” says an impatient John H as Annie is about to land. “Not quite yet, John,” she says with a grin, stretching out her arm in the direction of the still distant wheel. On landing, she climbs the stairs to the platform halfway up (visit Lady Isabella’s gallery), above the three-legged Manx coat of arms on the wall (triadic support). The clue is attached to the rotating wheel and – to her surprise – Annie successfully grabs it as it comes round.
Kenneth and the two Johns send Annie to Douglas (find a fir tree: Douglas fir). Keith lands on the beach and Annie spots a horse-drawn ‘toast-rack’ tram. She boards, rides along the seafront and sees a group of children riding donkeys on the sand. A girl has the clue.
John and John send Annie to Spanish Head (according to legend, a galleon from the Spanish Armada is wrecked close by). She lands, but one of the Johns realises that she should be heading for the nearby Cregneish Open Air Museum (kerroo = farmstead; haggard = trained hawk) so she immediately takes off again. “No, we haven’t landed,” she fibs. At the museum she meets two men thatching a cottage (suggane = straw rope used to secure thatch) but eventually finds the clue under the eaves of the cottage opposite.
Where the A36 (see red: A-roads are coloured red on Ordnance Survey maps) joins the A27 (36 divided by 27) is a viewpoint (sea view). North-west of this, on the A27, is a point 225 metres above sea level (lowdown on 225) where Annie spots a flock of sheep from the air (gimmer = ewe lamb; wether = castrated male sheep). The clue is on the collar of Misty the sheep dog.
The helicopter lands in the grounds of Peel Castle, which was built by King Magnus of Norway (where Magnus Barefoot made a pile), and which contains several ruined buildings. After looking in St Patrick’s church, Annie finds the treasure below the east window of St German’s Cathedral (an east German view).
