14th century poet William Langland wrote of Colwall, location
of the Schweppes plant where Malvern water is bottled (a plant that thrives
on water). On the way, Wincey announces that the contestants have had five minutes.
“Five minutes?” Annabel retorts. “Oh no! Hurry up!” The helicopter lands some
distance from the plant and Annabel gets a lift in a police car. When she arrives,
she climbs through an open window and finds the clue attached to a bottle on
the conveyor belt. Afterwards the policeman gives Annabel and the crew a lift
back to the helicopter. |

‘Land of Hope and Glory’ was in ‘Enigma Variations’ by Edward
Elgar, who was associated with the Malverns area, and whose hobby was kite flying
(the Land of Hope and Glory man’s high-flying hobby). Annabel lands on the top
of North Hill at the north end of The Malvern Hills (at the top end of the range)
and finds a group of kite fliers. One of the kites is a yellow-and-black ‘Wasp’
dihedral (an aerodynamic form used in kites and aircraft wings) which Annabel
brings down. The clue is on the end of the tail (a sting in its tail). |

The helicopter heads for Bromyard, which lost its rail service
in the 1960s (the town that’s gone off the rails), and lands at the showground,
where a fair is being held (a festive occasion). The British Morgan Horse Society
(equine versions of the Malvern car: Morgan cars are handmade in Great Malvern)
are putting on a display. In the centre, a girl opens a box containing two white
doves (signs of peace), and Annabel finds the clue at the bottom of the box. |

North of Linley Green (Snowdon’s heir) is Lower Brockhampton
House, a half-timbered National Trust property (trusty trusses and crucks).
After looking inside the house, Annabel finds a gardener. The clue is in his
trug (a flat wooden fruit basket used for gardening). |

Above the River Teme (above the Teme-ing crowds) lies Shelsley
Walsh (anagram of SLY HAL’S WHEELS) where a vintage car hill-climbing event is
in progress (a vintage challenge). Annabel and the crew ride in one of the cars
to the top of the hill (rise to it) and reach the treasure, the chequered flag
(it’s down in black and white). [They were supposed to ride in a Napier car
(Napier invented mathematical logs) but it wouldn’t start, so they rode in an
Alvis]. |
