Notes
As usual, the cameraman was Guy Littlemore and the sound recordist was Simon Burles, but the helicopter was flown by local pilot Andrew (instead of Keith Thompson).
1 The helicopter heads for Sauselito (saucer, Lee, to). The Bay Delta Model Building contains a huge, 1950s-built model of the San Francisco Bay area. Joseph Strauss designed the Golden Gate Bridge (Strauss spanner) which we saw earlier (deja vu).
2 Jack London, author of ‘The Sea Wolf’, grew up in Oakland. The presidential yacht of Franklin D Roosevelt, ‘Potomac’ (DC’s river) is moored there, and nearby is the lightship ‘Relief’ (light relief), where the clue is in the compass room (find your bearings). [Officially WLV 605, ‘Relief’ is a relief ship which took place of the main ship. It is one of the few remaining floating lighthouses left].
3 Suzi lands near the San Francisco end of Bay Bridge and finds a police car (panda) waiting. “Excuse me, are you Randy?” she asks the police officer inside. “Yes I am,” he says, and drives her along The Embarcadero to where the fire boat is moored at pier 30 (XXX). [‘Barney McGrew’ was a fireman in the children’s TV programme ‘Trumpton’].
4 Suzi takes the ferry (charter float) to Alcatraz Island (The Rock) where she finds former guard Frank Heaney near the lookout tower. His nickname among inmates was ‘Beebop’ (jazz musician Charlie Parker’s style) which was the latest musical style at the time he joined. When Suzi says “beebop and swing” to him, he gives her the clue.
5 Guy and Simon climb aboard a pickup truck, but Suzi has to run/walk up the long hill to the cell block at the top of The Rock. Gangster Al Capone, whose business card read ‘second hand furniture salesman’, served time for tax evasion in cell B206.
