Notes
Hatton Garden is the London street that is famous for its many high-class jewellers. General Gordon was the hero of the Battle of Khartoum in 1885.
Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, was nicknamed ‘Warwick the Kingmaker’ for his role in assisting Edward IV to be crowned king during the Wars of the Roses, and later restoring Henry VI to the throne.
Annie has to find a music room in which a number of waxwork dummies are posed as if listening to a quartet playing music. But the figure of the waiter in the group is not a dummy and Annie gets a shock when he moves (!)
Legend has it that in his youth William Shakespeare was caught poaching in Charlecote Park by its first owner, Sir Thomas Lucy, a local magistrate. Shakespeare later based the character Justice Shallow in ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’ on Sir Thomas.
Mary Arden, mother of William Shakespeare, was married at Aston Cantlow. Her family’s house in Wilmcote is preserved as Mary Arden’s House.
