Notes
As usual, the cameraman was Graham Berry, but the video engineer was Serge Beaupere (instead of Frank Meyburgh) and the local helicopter was flown by Pierre Escalle (instead of Keith Thompson).
1 Kenneth tells the contestants that Grasse is the perfume capital of the area (the scented city) and that the artist Fragonard was born there. Annie – wearing a particularly fetching pink jumpsuit – lands near the Parfumerie Fragonard, eventually finds the entrance, and meets a ‘nose’ (an expert on perfumes) inside. He takes her downstairs to a room where the perfumes are being distilled and blended, and she finds the clue on a bottle of jasmine (‘Moonlight of the Grove’ is known as jasmine in India).
2 Pablo Picasso’s final home was Notre-Dame-de-Vie in Moulin, a town that is also home to the exclusive Moulin de Mougin restaurant (a very haute-cuisine mill). Pierre lands in a field outside and Annie has to negotiate some undergrowth before finding the entrance to the kitchen. The clue is on a cake with ‘Treasure Hunt’ on the side.
3 The helicopter flies to Cannes (Lord Brougham’s settlement) and lands next to the beach. Annie runs along the seafront and on to the public beach (public holiday building site) beyond the Hotel Majestic (beyond a majestic beach). Ken and Stephanie ask her to look for a sandcastle (topsy turvy work). “Chateau de sable,” Stephanie (an A-level language student) tells her. “Chateau de sable. Thanks Wincey,” says Annie, and kicks over several sandcastles before finding the one with the clue inside.
4 Ken quickly sends Annie to Palm Beach Casino (American-sounding money spinner) and tells her that the number of Sussex sisters was seven. When Annie arrives she finds a single game of roulette underway in an almost empty casino. She plays 7, wins, and is given the clue.
5 Stephanie and Ken send Annie out to sea towards the islands of Île St Marguerite (where, in Dumas’s novel, the ‘Man In The Iron Mask’ was imprisoned) and Île St Honorat (where there is a monastery; St Patrick’s alma mater, a monkish refuge). “K2?” comments Ken, “That was the little dog in Doctor Who”. Annie corrects him, then spots the yacht ‘Krina 2’. She takes off her radio and hands it to Graham, who commentates while she jumps into the water and swims (take a lucky dip) to the yacht. Once on board, she runs to the stern and waves a flag (show the ensign, something Annie has to do rather than find).
