Notes
The helicopter flies past Holker Hall (owned by the Cavendish family) towards Cartmel Priory (the Austin brothers’ prior place). From the air, Annabel spots some Morris dancers in Cartmel Square (square up with the Morris connection). She lands, joins in with the dance, and is given the clue by the dancer dressed as Horatio Nelson. It is in his hat (seek Horatio’s hat).
Maggie and Jon tell Annabel to fly to Newton Fell (gravitate towards an uphill apple-watcher), where she sees a dog race in progress (where aniseed has blazed a sporting trail). After landing she locates Margaret, the owner of dog no 278, ‘Biggles’ (sort out Capt John’s hero), who has the clue. [During the commercial break, Annabel changes into a wetsuit].
Annabel flies towards Lake Windermere (Oscar Wilde wrote ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan’). Near Great Tower Plantation, an area on the lake’s eastern shore owned by the Scouts, she sees water-ski champion Brett Hodgkins in action on the water. The helicopter briefly lands on a jetty to deposit Annabel, then takes off as she dons water-skis. Frankie commentates while she tries to water-ski. She falls in, but Brett arrives with the clue.
During the re-positioning, Annabel changes back into her skyrunner suit.
Keith flies over the expanse of sands around the Kent estuary (where the Garden of England meets the Sahara) and Annabel eventually sees two horse-drawn carriages crossing (a level crossing with carriages but no track). The helicopter lands, Annabel and the crew board the second carriage, which drives them to a laurel bush planted in the sand. The guide from the first carriage helps Annabel dig the clue from beside the bush. [In the past, laurel bushes were used to mark the safe route across the quicksand; hence ‘look to his laurels’].
Beyond the RSPB reserve at Leighton Moss (beyond booming bitterns) lies Leighton Hall (Leighton Buzzard = buzzard from Beds). Annabel enters the drawing room and finds a woman sewing. The treasure, a thimble (pull your finger out) is nearby.
