Ted and David get stuck with the clue, but Annabel sees some
horses (subjects of Stubbs) cantering (Canterbury Tales, Chaucer’s pilgrims)
near Lambourn (eponymous Larry, Larry the Lamb). She lands and Kenneth tells
her to look for the horse ‘Cartooness’ (female Giles). The clue is under the
saddle. |

Peter de Savary owns both Land’s End and Littlecote House.
When Annabel lands at Littlecote she finds herself in the middle of a Tudor
re-enactment and is pestered by the ‘village idiot’. “He’s horrible!” she complains.
The contestants direct her to a tug-of-war (“when Greeks joined Greeks, then
there was tug of war” – Nathaniel Lee). She joins in, but the ‘idiot’ insists
on pulling her hair. When the tug is over, ‘Sir Walter Raleigh’ takes Annabel
to ‘Queen Elizabeth I’ who gives her the clue. The ‘idiot’ chases her back to
the helicopter. |

In Hungerford at Hocktide (the second Tuesday after Easter)
elected ‘Tuttimen’, carrying long staves decorated with spring flowers and topped
with an orange, visit houses taking a penny from the men and a kiss from the
women and give an orange in exchange. To the east of Hungerford lies Norland
(North-country) College for nannies (lessons for Christopher Robin’s Alice).
Annabel lands, meets some of the student nannies and finds the clue on a children’s
collage of a helicopter in the playroom. |

West of Shaw (Pygmalion’s playwright) and Speen (site of the
Battle of Speen, 1644, involving Oliver Cromwell) is Bagnor, with its waterside
theatre. A farce is taking place when Annabel arrives, and she goes on stage
and meets an actor (who’d played ‘Roger the Lodger’ on TV) and an actress in
a gorilla suit. The ‘gorilla’ has the clue. |

The helicopter flies west, crossing the Kennet and Avon Canal
(Rennie’s aqueous highway). To the north of Inkpen (a writer’s stock in trade)
lies Inglewood Health Farm. Had she not run out of time, Annabel would have
found the treasure, a plastic ice-cream sundae (“it’s naughty but it’s nice”),
floating on the swimming pool. |
