Notes
As usual, the cameraman was Guy Littlemore and the sound recordist was Simon Burles, but the helicopter was flown by local pilot Jim (instead of Keith Thompson).
1 Liz and Claire send Suzi to The Mission Church of St Xavier Del Bac (your mission. St X marks the spot). Inside the striking white building (the White Dove’s inside; ‘The White Dove of the Desert’ is the local nickname for the church) are two statues of lions guarding the chancel (in Greek mythology, Hippomenes and Atalanta were lovers who were turned into a pair of lions). The clue is on one of the statues.
2 The helicopter heads south-east (SE) to the Colossal Cave Mountain Park (it’s near colossal) and to La Posta Quemada Ranch (‘Quemada Posta’ means ‘burnt post’ in Spanish). There Suzi meets a cowboy called Rick (Casablanca Bogie; Humphrey Bogart played Rick Blaine in ‘Casablanca’). She mounts his horse and they set off on horseback, looking in turn at three orange flags in the middle of the arena (ring, and you’ll be flagging). The clue is on the third flag.
3 Colossal Cave (the local underground) contains a maze of passages and chambers. Guided by Liz, Claire and Dermot, Suzi navigates past the dry stalactite and stalagmite formation known as ‘The Elves’ Kingdom’ to a chamber called ‘The Draperies’ (through the Elves’ Kingdom to the cloth seller). There she sees a huge stalagmite known as ‘The Pencil and Eraser’ and finds the clue at its base (2B or not 2B, that is the answer; ‘2B’ being a soft grade of pencil).
4 Flying west (out west), Suzi reaches Old Tucson Studios (confused old counts; ‘counts’ being an anagram of ‘Tucson’). “It’s like the Black Country Museum in Dudley,” she quips when she spots the site from the air. Jim lands, and Suzi runs through the turnstiles into the main street, where cowboys are staging a gunfight. The contestants tell her to look for the Grand Palace Saloon, but she finds a food stall (wagon) on which is a pan of warm baked beans (Jack thinks they’re magic; in ‘Jack & the Beanstalk’, young Jack sells his mother’s only cow for a handful of magic beans that grow overnight into the Beanstalk). The clue is in the beans and she gets a bit messy retrieving it!
5 US President Bill Clinton’s Attorney General (Clinton’s AG) was Janet Reno, and after running past Big Jake’s restaurant Suzi spots a steam locomotive called ‘Reno’. Liz and Claire tell her where on the loco to look, and after some searching she finds the treasure behind the cow-catcher, the v-shaped structure on the front used to push stray cows out of the path of the train (catching a cow – and a clue).
